Agree or Disagree: Self Discipline Is Key to Success Essay

When it comes to success, there are many different factors that play a role in increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome. One can easily lose track of their goals, which can lead to a lack of intended achievement. However, there are a few key ingredients that can contribute to a successful end result.

One such variable in achieving success is through self-discipline. One can think of discipline in two different ways, from outside or from within. Similar to different motivation tactics (intrinsic vs. extrinsic), self-discipline can help to improve grades, work performance, diet, and has even been linked to an increase in happiness while dealing with the stressors of life (Hofmann, Fisher, Luhmann, Vohs, & Baumeister, 2013).

The happiness-success relationship is an interesting one to investigate, as it appears to have a positive influence over a variety of aspects of one's life. Research has suggested that positive affect may be a contributing cause to the characteristics associated with happiness, including the attainment of resources and successes (Lyubomirsky, King, & Diener, 2005). If happiness has been traced back to self-discipline, and happiness is associated with an increase in successes, thus, in essence, self-discipline can be considered the most important ingredient for success.

Knowing the ways self-discipline can influence one's life is only part of the equation. The other part involves understanding how to develop and strengthen self-discipline in order to achieve a positive outcome. Self-discipline is a form of training, in that new habit of thought, action, and speech allows you to move towards achieving your intended goal. It is important to use SMART goals in order to evaluate achievement. SMART goals consist of Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound (Locke & Latham, 2005).

By maintaining a positive outlook, knowing that the goals in mind are being pursued through the implementation of self-discipline, not only can success become a reality, but so can happiness. Such a finding can help to support the hypothesis that self-discipline is the most important ingredient for success.
